“Chatter” – (v.) to utter rapidly or purposelessly, (n.) idle or foolish talk; gossip.
A couple of months ago I was reading some world news report that was discussing the level of “chatter” that seemed to be missing from terrorist groups around the world. Chatter here is referring to the constant information being passed back and forth between the groups. Intelligence agencies become nervous when there is a lack of chatter. It makes them wonder if there is something big being planned by these groups.
People with extremely long tongues (gossipers) feel the same way. They thrive on the latest gossip. When the stream of the latest news dries up, they go searching for some news to manipulate. Maybe their own lives feel meaningless and boring so they put some “spice” into the mix and stir, stir, stir…
As much as I would love to eradicate the very nature of this (sinful) “chatter”, people will be people and no doubt they will talk…about the last thing that happened between…well, you get the idea. We may not be able to totally eliminate it from our world, but we can minimize it in the atmosphere we choose to dwell in.
Just a couple of thoughts…
Change the subject – when people start gossiping, simply try to find a segue into another topic. For me personally, it becomes like a game. It’s like being on a merry go round and attempting to jump off without getting hurt. After all, gossip can be dangerous to your health.
STOP IT! – If you have a problem with “people” speaking to you about stuff – particularly about other people and their issues, kindly stop them and ask them if the info is important or if it is uplifting. If not, let them know in a nice way that you only want to hear and speak about positive things. Talk about stopping people in their tracks. It doesn’t have to be confrontational. It’s just asking for personal respect to not spew trash all over you. People will quickly get the message. Philippians 4:8 is a great reference for being positive. For that matter, pick just one chapter of Proverbs and I will bet you will find some good Word comparisons about what the wise speak versus what the foolish speak.
I would love to live in a perfect world where there was no al-Qaeda and terrorists; a world where intelligence agencies never heard “chatter”. While I am dreaming, I would also love to never have to hear anyone chattering about things that 1) don’t pertain to them and 2) are many time vicious and harmful. I can choose to limit my surroundings from the existence of chatter. It is my choice…and it is your choice. Wouldn’t that be nice…a world without “chatter”? Anyway, as your mother told you, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all!”
